Recent research links working memory with academic success. Tracy Alloway (2010) observed that scores from a memory test administered at the age of five, accurately predicted the academic performance through school and college.
The result in itself is not surprising to anyone who's been through the Indian education system.

But the practical takeaway to my mind is that an early intervention can be made to assist a child in developing the working memory.
