My best friend is a south Indian and she gave me a traditional twist to the culture of toys.
Marapachi Bommais, literally translated into Wooden dolls, are supposedly made from a special kind of wood which even has medicinal properties.
So basically, according to tradition, the bride's father presents his daughter with a pair of these toys: a male and a female. This apart, the groom's sister gifts another pair to the bride.
Apparently these dolls denote progeny and the rationale behind using toys is linked to the early "child" marriages in the Indian system.
Would you know of any other tales from other parts of the country? Do share.
